6 MONTHS!!! L Squad has been together for 6 months now and the Lord has worked in and thru us. After our time at Mission of Hope, we split into teams to do team ministry. Team Revel was sent to a city called Puerto Plata to work at a school called Makarios. Makarios is a school that values the lives of the students. The mission of the school is to present the gospel in each class- whether it be in chapel class or math class- the students are reminded of the Bible. At the school, we sit in on English classes, movement classes, chapel classes, and volleyball practice. In English, we started by just having Q and A time, helping the students with pronunciation and grammar. Movement class is like Occupational Therapy for elementary-aged kids. This class teaches them skills like hand-eye coordination, how to engage their core, and things like that. It also helps them get out extra energy so they can focus better in class. In movement class, we help at different stations just making sure the kids are doing what they are supposed to. The chapel class is also for the littles. In chapel class, they sing and dance and listen to a bible story. We are in that class just to help make sure everyone is listening and paying attention. Volleyball practices are run by a few Team Revel members. Before we came to Makarios, there weren’t many sports for the kids to participate in so when we got there, a few people with a volleyball background stepped up and coached volleyball! A few of us were plugged into the discipleship program at Makarios. The program is for 11th graders-graduated seniors. In discipleship, we get to encourage and come alongside them. For the 11th and 12th graders, we got to encourage them as they talked about how hard junior and senior year is. We got to talk about some of the experiences we had walking through those years and offered them hope that things get better. We were able to remind them of the rest and comfort found in the Lord’s plan and timing. For the graduated seniors, we did a teaching on success. We talked about the worldly view of success and the Lord’s view of success and how those two could be the same. The Lord was stirring in some of their hearts. Because of that, we were able to share parts of our stories about how we trusted the Lord thru uncertain and hard times and how beneficial and comforting that time was. We were also able to tell part of our testimonies.

Fun facts:

  • we are really close to the beach so a lot of our off days and sabbaths have been spent at Playa Dorado.
  • we Guagua everywhere. Guaguas are a form of public transportation.
  • February 27th is the Dominican Republic’s Independence Day and they celebrate with a parade.
  • At the house we live in there is a full kitchen so team revel has been able to cook dinner.

Prayer requests:

  • TRAVEL DAY!! On March 2nd we will be leaving for Swaziland.
  • The ministry of Makarios: that the Lord would continue to work and that some of the hearts students would be open to the Lord.

Much love,

Kate Gentry
